Zdeněk Židek | OMEXOM: We want employees to have safety in their DNA

OMEXOM GA Energo celebrates 30 years on the market this year. On this occasion, we present an interview with CEO Zdeněk Židek, one of the co-founders, in 1993.

How do you remember the beginning of the company?

The beginnings were tough, given that we needed more information about the business. We founded the company in 1993. We drew information from Philip Kotler’s Management and Marketing or Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and other manuals. We were learning how to run a company and a business. We started the company with my father, Václav Hubac, and a few assemblers—about six people in total.

What were the significant milestones in its history?

The first milestone was when we decided to give up some independence, and in 1996, we signed a cooperation agreement with the German company GA. To this day, we have had those two letters in our name. GA was an electrical company that had been in business since 1916, and we were able to learn from them. Two years after the cooperation was signed, we sold the majority to this German company. The significant benefit of this move for us was cheaper credit allowing us to grow. The next important step was the establishment of a branch in Slovakia. A major step was in 2012 when VINCI bought the entire GA holding.

What do you like to remember in particular?

I like to remember every good colleague who felt comfortable with us. I also like to remember all the company successes, such as the first big event for ČEPS or Středočeská energetika and the first big order from ČEZ or EON. But I would also mention the first accident that we eliminated in the Aš region when the power line fell on the beam on December 30, and we were able to restore the supply on January 1.

Undoubtedly, a significant step for the company was the acquisition of the NPT—a replacement transmission line, when we became the European market leader in eliminating very high and exceptionally high voltage accidents.

Would you have made any decisions differently?

I am convinced that if I decide to buy a coat in one shop, I cannot look in another shop to buy another coat. Additionally, I believe that any decision, even a bad one, is better than no decision. I don’t think I could find an example of a decision I would have made differently. Once the decision was made, we went in the direction we decided to go and didn’t look at the fact that we could have made it differently. It was at a particular time, under certain circumstances, knowledge, and we acted accordingly.

Can you say three things that make you proud of the company?

I’m proud of the colleagues we have in the firm. I’m proud of every employee who is the company’s soul, and I’m proud of how we treat our employees because I think the greatest know-how of a company is its employees. I’m proud of every emergency that is solved, every intervention that may not be visible but is well handled.

What is the biggest focus of the company?

Throughout the company, our biggest focus is workplace safety, and we say workplace safety is the company culture. We want every employee to have workplace safety in their DNA.

What is the company’s vision for the future?

I believe in the company’s continued growth because there are still territories in the country where we are weakly represented. The vision is to make our deliveries more efficient because we are the highest quality company with the most significant focus on occupational safety. Still, with our customers, price is the decisive factor—meaning that we have to be able to compete with garage companies with much lower prices. Therefore, we need to take advantage of our spread across the country to ensure that we can offer our quality and safety work at the prices our customers demand from us.

What would you say to the employees in your company?

I want our employees to feel happy in the company, and if they have any reservations or doubts about the company’s operations, they should not be afraid to come and discuss it with me. Only feedback and communication within the company can move the company forward and guarantee that 30 years from now, it will still be the market leader in electrical installation.
